This listing is for a large, raw chunk of turritella agate with a myriad of snail fossils throughout, weighing just shy of 14 lbs and 10" wide.
Turritella agate, a fossil-rich chalcedony, known for its snail fossils entombed inside, generally has a brown & black semi-transparent quality, especially when polished, while the snail fossils, white in color, create a sharp contrast. As such, turritella is ideal for slabbing, cabochons, polishing - virtually any type of lapidary work. This large, rough turritella piece is from the Green River formation in Wyoming & dates back approximately 45-60 million years ago (Eocene era).
Interesting factoid: Turritella agate is a misnomer in that the discoverer thought the snail fossils were from the Turritella genus, however, the snail fossils are from the freshwater variety, Elimia tenera, which is a member of the Pleuroceridae family.
Weight: 13 lbs & 13 oz (6,255 grams).
