Japanese Army saber-style sword mounts (koshirae) with a long grip designed for two-handed use.
This distinctive Japanese military mounting style accommodated a traditional Japanese sword blade with a broad profile and long tang within a Western-style saber configuration.
The original sword blade was discarded after the war and replaced with a lightweight aluminum-alloy imitation blade.
The grip is covered with fine-quality rayskin and decorative wire wrapping. The backstrap fitting features a cherry blossom motif.
The wooden scabbard has a metal suspension fitting with a ring beneath a pigskin leather cover. The habaki appears to be brass, and two seppa spacers are fitted.
The metal fittings show age-related darkening and some verdigris. The replacement imitation blade has surface scratches and marks.
The imitation blade is secured with a mekugi peg but has slight play in the mounting.
The leather scabbard cover has loose stitching near the snap closure. There is also abrasion near the tip, with a localized area of peeling leather surface. Please examine all photos carefully for the condition and details.
Approximate measurements:
Overall length in scabbard: 94 cm / 37.0 inches
Overall length out of scabbard: 83 cm / 32.7 inches
Blade length: 62 cm / 24.4 inches
Scabbard length: 73 cm / 28.7 inches
This item consists of historical sword mounts fitted with a replacement imitation blade. No original sword blade is included.
