We are offering a letter dated Jan. 1, 1904, from Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills, Atlanta, Georgia to Farr Alpaca Co., Holyoke, Massachusetts. Letterhead has a very nice vignette of the cotton mill/factory that was built in 1880. **AN INTERESTING NOTE** - This former cotton mill has been transformed into the modern-day Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts (apartments and condos) while keeping the historical elements of the building.
The company had its early beginnings in 1870 with several different names, becoming the Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills in 1889. During its history there were a number of labor strikes, the last one in 1914 when workers demanded an increase in wages, a 54-hour work week, and a decrease in the use of child labor. The strike gained national attention and the U.S. Commission on Industrial Relations was formed, sending representatives to Atlanta, but the strike failed. The letter was asking Mr. Farr to give an assessment of the qualifications of American Appraisal Co., Milwaukee, based on his experience with the company. Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills was considering the company to appraise their business property for the purpose of obtaining fire insurance.
