Cricket MemorabiliaThe Autograph of Herbert Sutcliffe

Cricket Memorabilia The Autograph of Herbert SutcliffeMr. Sutcliffe’s autograph appears on a small “thankyou” note to a donor for a contribution to Leonard Braund and Philip Mead Fund. (See below for more details).Herbert Sutcliffe(24 November 1894 – 22 January 1978) was an Englishprofessionalcricketerwho representedYorkshireandEnglandas anopening batsman. Apart from one match in 1945, hisfirst-classcareer spanned the period between the two world wars. His first-class debut was delayed by the First World War until 1919 and his career was effectively terminated in August 1939 when he was called up for military service in the imminentSecond World War. In the winter of 1932–33, Sutcliffe was a key member of the English Cricket team that toured Australia andNew Zealandunder the captaincy of Douglas Jardine, taking part in all five Tests of the infamous "bodyline" series.Although close friends have stated that Sutcliffe did not approve of bodyline, he always acted out of fierce loyalty to his team captain and was committed to his team's cause. He was the first cricketer to score 16 centuries in Test match cricket. In statistical terms, Sutcliffe was one of the most successful Test batsmen ever; his completed careerbatting averagewas 60.73 which is the highest by any English batsman and the seventh-highest worldwide (i.e., of Test batsmen with 20 completed innings) behind onlyDon Bradman,Marnus Labuschagne,Steve Smith,Adam Voges,Graeme PollockandGeorge Headley.Leonard Charles Braund(18 October 1875 – 23 December 1955) was acricketerwho played forSurrey,SomersetandEngland. Len Braund was anall-rounder, a versatile batsman who could defend or attack according to the needs of the game and aleg breakbowler who used variation more than accuracy to take wickets. He was also regarded by contemporaries as the best slip fielder of his time. After retiring, Braund coached atCambridge Universityand was a first-classumpirefor 18 seasons to 1938, standing in three Test matches between 1926 and 1929. Braund was beset by ill-health in his later life and had both legs amputated during the Second World War. Despite this, he was a regular attender at Lord's right up to his death, and he was one of the first 26 former professionals to be granted honorary membership of MCC in 1949.Charles Phillip Mead(9 March 1887 – 26 March 1958) was an Englishfirst-class cricketer. He played as a 1905 and 1936.Soon afterWorld War II, problems with his eyes which had begun in 1941–2 led to Mead becoming totallyblind, but he never complained about this. He had predictable mannerisms – having got to the crease with his "rolling, self-reliant" walk, he took guard, twirled his bat, tapped his bat in the crease and took several shuffling steps up to it. Before every ball he would tug his cap.His batting was not slow, but completely unhurried; a spectator once described him as having 'stone-walled' from a quarter to one to half past six for 200. His financial worries were assuaged by a fund raised byHerbert Sutcliffefor Mead andLen Braund. He retained a great interest in cricket and often attended Hampshire matches atDean Parkright up to his death on 26 March 1958
