Civil War Patriotic Cover – Major General Nathaniel P. Banks – Poolesville, MD.
Original Civil War-era patriotic envelope featuring a portrait of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, one of the prominent Union generals of the war and former governor of Massachusetts.
The cover bears a POOLESVILLE, MD. OCT. 18 circular date stamp and a 3-cent Washington stamp. Poolesville was an important Union military location along the upper Potomac during the opening period of the Civil War and was within the area of Banks's operations.
Especially interesting is the printer/dealer identification associated with the patriotic design: Hunckel & Son, Baltimore, with J. S. Morrow identified as seller. This gives the envelope considerably more context than an unidentified generic Civil War patriotic.
The 3-cent stamp is perforated on three sides, with the left side cut into the design. The envelope's left edge has also been reduced, but importantly the principal patriotic illustration remains intact. There are age-related handling marks and wear, with hinge remnants and some paper loss on the reverse. Please examine the high-resolution scans carefully for condition.
An attractive and unusually well-identified Union patriotic combining General Banks, Poolesville postal history, a period 3-cent Washington stamp, and a documented Baltimore imprint.
From the collection of Dr. Allan C. “Doc” Johnson (1889-1941) of Clinton, Massachusetts, an active stamp collector during the early 20th century. Doc's collection has remained with his family for more than eight decades.
