JOHNSON - AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT DOUBLE SIGNED 07/07/1888 CO-SIGNED BY: WALTER H. HARRISON - HFSID 174622BRADLEY TYLER JOHNSON, CO-SIGNED BY: WILLIAM H. HARRISON
Bradley T. Johnson handwrote a rider on the back of this 1881 typed contract for the transfer of a mining company.
Autograph document signed \"Bradley T. Johnson\" twice and \"W. H. Harrison\". Black ink notations in bottom left corner on side with autograph document in unknown hand. 2 pages, 8x13, 1 sheet, front and verso. July 7, 1888. Autograph document in full: \"Recieve of Walter H Harrison the sum - of Seventeen Hundred Dollars in part payment of the [illegible] and it is agreed that [illegible] Walter H Harrison, & [crossed-out portion] shall pay the remains thereby Three Hundred Dollars to said Johnson as sum as the Title to said property is [illegible] by the said Jordan Mountain Manganese Mining Company.\" This document was written on the back of a typed contract. Johnson was to acquire all the capital stock of the Jordan Mountain Manganese Mining Company in return for titles to unnamed mining property. He was also to transfer the company to Harrison for $5,000. With hindsight, it\'s easy to predict Johnson (1829-1903) would break when the American Civil War broke out. Born in Maryland, he was a delegate to the 1860 National Democratic Convention and joined the majority of his delegation when it withdrew to support the Southern wing of the party, which supported John Cabell Breckenridge for president. During the war, he organized and equipped a company at his own expense and helped form the 1st Maryland Infantry, declining a lieutenant colonel\'s commission in Virginia so that he would stay with his own state. He eventually rose to brigadier general of cavalry in 1864. As commander of the Salisbury, North Carolina post, he stopped a train bound for the Army of Northern Virginia to feed starving prisoners of war. After the war, he practiced law in Richmond, Virginia and, after 1879, in Baltimore, Maryland. Folds, creases, not near signature. Light show-through of ink on verso. Otherwise in fine condition.See more material from these signers:BRIGADIER GENERAL BRADLEY T. JOHNSON WALTER H. HARRISON See more listings in our MILITARY (2,442) category.
