JSA Authenticated December 5, 1840 New Jersey Governor WILLIAM PENNINGTON Autograhed Letter To Abraham Suydam

WILLIAM PENNINGTON (b.1796 - d.1862)
-  American Politician & Lawyer
-  13th Governor of New Jersey (1837-1843)
-  23rd Speaker of the House during his term in Congress
-  Member of the Whig Party

ABRAHAM SUYDAM (Murdered, 33 years old, December 1840)
-  Wealthy Merchant & Banker from New Brunswick, New Jersey
- President of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank of New Brunswick, New Jersey
- Found murdered and buried about four (4) feet in the ground, under the cellar floor of a house belonging to Peter Robinson, December 14, 1840. (Mr. Suydam was last seen alive about the time this item/letter was written!)  His skull had been severely fractured from a hammer, mallet, axe or similar instrument. Mr. Robinson's house was built on credit from Mr. Suydam. Mr. Robinson was charged with the murder of Mr. Suydam and found Guilty. Mr. Robinson was hanged, in New Jersey, in April 1841.
-  It is commonly believed that Mr. Suydam's muder inspired EDGAR ALLAN POE's Classic Short Story "The Tell-Tale Heart" published in January 1843.

°  Autographed Handwritten Free Frank Posted Letter
°  Letter of Authenticity from JSA (Certification Number:  Z98179)

CONDITION:
The Autographed Free Frank Posted Letter is written on a piece of folded paper.  The writing instrument used was a dip pen using black-in-color ink. Edge ware is moderate.  Corners have moderate rounding and crushing.  Overall creases are minor to moderate. There are several heavy mailing folds. Soiling/darkening is moderate and heavier along borders and along the heavy folds. There are a few stains. The reverse has an area of paper loss from the wax seal being broken/opened. There are some remnants of a red-in-color roundish wax seal. The reverse has adhesive residue transfer on the corners from possible mounting purposes by a previous owner.
