Antique Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn (WS&S) Bohemian Ceramic Charger / Wall Plaque. Circa 1880–1890
Approximately 12 inches diameterA striking late-19th-century ceramic charger by the noted Bohemian pottery manufacturer Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn (WS&S).This unusually elaborate example features an extraordinarily detailed all-over Islamic / Moorish / Persian Revival arabesque design, arranged in concentric borders around a central floral medallion. The deeply worked decoration and antiqued metallic coloration give the ceramic surface the appearance of finely chased metal. The reverse bears the WS&S manufacturer’s mark together with the impressed model/production number, apparently 9516. Numbered WS&S ceramics with the impressed workshop mark are well documented; comparable examples are identified by major sale houses as products of the Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn Majolika- und Terracottafabrik of Bohemia. Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn was an important Bohemian ceramics manufacturer particularly associated with elaborate majolica and decorative pottery during the second half of the 19th century. Surviving pieces include Renaissance, Moorish and Islamic-inspired designs; a documented circa-1890 WS&S Islamic-style ewer similarly employs elaborate arabesque decoration. Museum connection: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has work by Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn in its permanent collection, reflecting the recognized place of the manufacturer within 19th-century European decorative arts. (This statement refers to the maker; this particular charger is not represented as having been owned by or exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum.)Condition: Very good antique condition considering its approximately 125+ years of age. The photographs show expected age-related surface variation and patination. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. A wire hanger is fitted to the reverse for wall display.
Please note the tiny flea bite (see last photo) which does not detract from its appearance. Details* Maker: Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn (WS&S)
