Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible Antique Victorian Musical Photograph Album dating to circa 1897–1900.
This exquisite piece of late-19th-century history pulls double duty as both a family portrait album and a wind-up music box. The exterior features a stunning, deeply embossed brass maritime anchor on the lid—a classic Victorian symbol for \"Hope\"—complete with a central miniature portrait frame. The cover is bound in its original plush, olive-brown velvet and secured by an ornate, fully functional brass latch.
The Music Box & Tune Sheet:
Unlike many surviving albums of this era, the mechanical movement is intact! Flipping to the back reveals the original, beautifully illustrated floral paper tune sheet which identifies this as a \"2 Airs\" mechanism. It plays two popular turn-of-the-century tunes:
1. \"Rolf a King Two-Step\"
2. \"Sadie, My Lady\" (Composed by John W. Bratton in 1897, safely dating this album).
The original winding key and original paper \"Notice\" label (\"Wind slowly and not too tight...\") are present on the bottom of the album.
The Photographs:
The album comes loaded with its historic contents, including original period cabinet cards and early portrait photographs featuring children in elaborate Victorian gowns, family groups, and outdoor scenes.
Condition Details:
Please review the high-resolution photos carefully to assess condition:
• Exterior: The plush velvet shows expected antique wear, thinning, and minor matting from handling over the last 125+ years, but it retains wonderful texture. The brass hardware has a gorgeous, uncleaned aged patina.
• Interior: The inner pages feature a striking faux-woodgrain finish. Please note there is an open tear in the paper lining on one of the inner back pages where the music box cylinder mechanism has been exposed (see photos). This is very common for these heavy, fragile albums but should be handled with care.
• Mechanism: The music box winds and plays. Due to age, it should be wound gently and slowly as indicated by the original warning label.
This is a spectacular, untouched piece of Americana and mechanical history. It makes a premier addition to any collection of antique music boxes, Victoriana, or early photography.
