An absolutely beautiful surviving antique portrait depicting a formally dressed husband and wife, presented behind dramatic a large oval frame.
The portrait appears to be an antique photographic enlargement with extensive hand-enhanced/crayon-style detailing, a technique commonly used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to transform photographs into impressive family portraits.
The detail is fantastic — from the gentleman’s mustache, hair and formal suit to the woman’s Victorian dress, scarf and facial features. The portrait has developed a wonderful warm sepia tone that gives the piece incredible character.
The dark oval frame features an attractive tiger-stripe / faux woodgrain finish, and the original-style aged backing remains present. Faint handwritten information is also visible on the reverse and has intentionally been left untouched.
Approximate overall measurements:
21" wide × 15" tall
The convex glass appears intact and displays beautifully.
This piece shows genuine age throughout, including expected discoloration, spotting, surface wear, frame wear and other age-related imperfections. Please carefully review all photographs, as they are an important part of the description.
A gorgeous piece of Victorian photographic history that would make an outstanding addition to an antique photography collection, Victorian interior, historical display, gallery wall, dark-academia décor, or period home.
Sold exactly as photographed. No attempt has been made to clean, restore or alter the portrait or antique backing.
