An attractive antique figural bronze spill holder featuring a naturalistically modeled frog standing upon a detailed leaf-form base.
This unusual piece displays craftsmanship well above the average decorative bronze of the period. The frog exhibits carefully rendered anatomical details including textured skin, webbed feet, expressive eyes, and individually modeled surface features. The sculptor paid particular attention to naturalistic detail throughout the composition.
The leaf base is exceptionally well executed, displaying deeply defined veins and organic surface texture. A separately modeled cut stem rests across the leaf, complete with realistic texture and a detailed cross-section at the cut end. Such attention to minor elements demonstrates a high level of artistic observation and craftsmanship.
The vessel carried by the frog is rendered with naturalistic growth details and serves as a spill holder intended for storing lighting spills used to transfer flame from fireplaces, candles, and oil lamps.
