Antique Japanese Satsuma Dragon Teapot Tea Set – Tokuju Mark, Arhats, Gilt Moriage

Offered for sale is an ornate group of Japanese Satsuma-style earthenware tea service pieces, attributed to the late Meiji period, circa 1880–1900. The set features finely detailed hand-painted depictions of Buddhist Arhats, also known as Lohan or Immortals, surrounded by elaborate gold-gilt decoration and raised moriage-style borders.

The centerpiece is an exceptional dragon-form teapot featuring a sculptural three-dimensional dragon motif incorporated into the handle and spout design. Detailed scales, expressive features, and gold accents give this piece a distinctive and dramatic appearance. The matching dragon finial lid is included, along with a coordinating ceramic vessel and matching saucer or cup dishes, as pictured.

Artist Markings and Details

The primary vessels are described as bearing gold-gilt Japanese characters:

  • 大日本 (Dai Nippon): “Great Japan”

  • 徳寿 (Tokuju): The attributed decorator's name

  • 画 (Ga): “Painted” or “drawn by”

The coordinating saucer or cup bases reportedly feature a matching abbreviated 画 mark. The teapot base is also described as having decorative phoenix motifs flanking the signature area.

These markings and decorative details are attractive features for collectors of Japanese ceramics. The Tokuju attribution and circa 1880–1900 dating have not been independently authenticated and are presented as attributions.

Pieces Included
  • One dragon-form Satsuma-style teapot

  • One matching (damaged) dragon finial lid

  • One coordinating ceramic vessel, possibly a sugar bowl or creamer body

  • Coordinating saucer or cup dishes, as shown in the photographs

Please review all photographs to confirm the exact assortment included in this lot.

Condition Report

This group is in good antique condition overall, with richly detailed decoration and attractive gilding. The teapot body is in excellent antique condition, with vibrant decoration and no reported cracks, structural repairs, or major chips to its main form.

Teapot and Coordinating Vessels:

  • The teapot body, sugar/creamer body, have no cracks, structural repairs, or major chips to their main forms.

  • Hand-painted faces, fine line work, and gold-gilt decoration remain bright and detailed.

  • Fine, tight glaze crazing is present throughout the cream-colored earthenware. This is commonly seen on Satsuma-style ceramics and is disclosed here as part of the set's condition.

Original Dragon Finial Lid — Damage Disclosed:

The matching lid is included but has two areas of damage:

  1. A small chip along the bottom insert rim edge.

  2. The tip of the molded dragon's nose/snout on the finial is broken off.

  3. The tea cup handle has been restored as seen on photo 6 and 7.

Both areas are documented in the photographs, including the close-up images. Please examine these images carefully before offerding and consider the lid's condition when evaluating the set.

The photographs are part of the description. Please review all images closely for the condition of each piece, including glaze crazing, gilding wear, and the specific lid damage noted above.
