Antique Hand Painted Bone Fan Framed Victorian c.1880 Aristocratic Salon Scene For Sale

Exceptional Antique Hand-Painted Fan in Shadowbox Frame
Victorian Period | Circa 1870–1890 | Bone Sticks | Aristocratic Salon Scene

Offered is a refined and highly decorative 19th-century hand-painted folding fan, elegantly preserved within a custom shadowbox frame. This piece embodies the craftsmanship and romantic aesthetic of the late Victorian era, drawing inspiration from 18th-century European aristocratic life.

The fan displays a beautifully executed salon musicale scene, rendered in delicate hand-applied pigments:

• A poised central female figure in a soft green gown, likely a performer or focal guest
• Musicians including a harpsichord player and flutist
• Finely dressed aristocrats engaged in quiet observation and conversation
• A richly appointed interior opening into a garden terrace

The composition reflects the enduring influence of Rococo court painting, evoking themes of refinement, culture, and leisure associated with the French aristocracy.

• Leaf: Hand-painted paper (gouache/watercolor), with visible brushwork and nuanced shading
• Sticks/Ribs: Carved natural bone, exhibiting authentic age and organic variation
• Mounting: Presented in a gilt shadowbox frame, complementing the period aesthetic

This is a genuinely hand-crafted object, not a later printed reproduction.

• Fan: Late 19th century (circa 1870–1890)
• Frame: Early 20th century, professionally adapted for display

The fan remains structurally complete and visually compelling, with:

• No missing ribs or structural breaks
• Original painted surface intact with expected age
• Light foxing and gentle toning consistent with its age
• Minor wear that does not detract from overall presentation

The piece displays exceptionally well and retains strong decorative presence.
