This edition contains the entire canonical Scriptures according to the decree of the Council of Trent, translated from the Latin Vulgate and diligently compared with the Hebrew, Greek, and other editions.

The Old Testament was first published by the English College at Douay in 1609, and the New Testament by the English College at Rheims in 1582. This edition was revised and corrected by Rev. Dr. Challoner according to the Clementine edition of the Scriptures.

Notable Features

This substantial antique family Bible features an exceptionally ornate period binding with a large raised cross design on the front cover, extensive gilt decoration, decorative metal hardware/clasps, embossed detailing and gilt page edges.

Interior illustrated material includes a portrait page for Pope Leo XIII, noting his election as Pope on February 20, 1878, as well as elaborate religious illustrations and decorative color plates.

Condition

Antique condition with age-related wear throughout consistent with a book approximately 145+ years old. Exterior binding shows rubbing, discoloration, surface wear and wear along the edges, corners and spine. Metal hardware and clasps show age-related patina/wear. Gilt page edges remain present with expected age-related wear.

Interior pages show age-related toning, foxing, spotting and other signs of age/use. Please carefully review all photographs for the exact cosmetic condition.
