This antique CDV 1870s portrait photo features a clergyman named Rev. H. H. Morgan in Plainwell, Michigan. It is an original Sepia-toned photograph on cardboard or paper, unframed and one of a kind. Produced by photographer I.D. Smith during the time period of 1850-1899, this vintage piece captures a significant moment in social history with a documentary style. It is a unique collectible item that offers a glimpse into the past of a man and his community in the United States during the late 19th century.
Reverend H. H. Morgan was a 19th-century pastor who served the local communities in Allegan County, Michigan, during the 1860s. Rev. Morgan served as a pastor for the First Congregational Church of Otsego. During that historical period, the Congregational Church of Otsego and the neighboring Presbyterian congregation in Plainwell (historically part of Gun Plain Township). In addition to his time in the Otsego and Plainwell area, historical records note he also spent time as an active minister in other parts of the state, including leading a notable revival during a pastorate in St. Clair County, Michigan from 1849 to 1851.Biographies of historical Michigan ministers from that era remember him as a highly practical and deeply principle-driven man. He was known as an ardent, uncompromising anti-slavery advocate who vocally preached his abolitionist convictions from the pulpit despite facing heavy pushback from early congregations before the Civil War. He eventually entered a superannuated (retired) status from active ministry in 1868.
