BUCK’S STATEMENT:
Imagine walking into a Chicago creamery office in January of 1916. Milk cans were coming and going, horse-drawn delivery wagons still worked the streets, and hanging somewhere behind the counter was a calendar just like this one — part advertisement, part artwork and something customers would glance at every day. More than a century later, this surviving January 1916 calendar still advertises the A.H. Barber Creamery Supply Co. at 300-306 West Austin Avenue in Chicago, proudly offering “Everything for the Creamery and Dairy But the Cow.” Above it all is a beautiful period portrait titled “Natalie,” dressed in a black hat, white fur and brilliant red wrap — exactly the sort of elegant advertising artwork that made an otherwise ordinary business calendar worth saving.
The calendar carries a 1914 B. & B. St. Paul, Minn. & Soo, Ont. copyright/printing line along the bottom and retains the January 1916 calendar block, including old handwritten/crossed date markings that became part of its story somewhere along the way. The heavy paper/card stock shows more than 100 years of age, including toning, foxing, spots, edge and corner wear, surface marks and old residue/markings on the reverse. No attempt has been made to erase the years from it. It is a wonderful survivor from Chicago’s early dairy industry and would be equally at home in a collection of creamery advertising, early Chicago history, antique calendars, dairy memorabilia or turn-of-the-century commercial illustration.
