Key Details & History
Origin and Founder (1903): The hospital was founded in 1903 by Dr. Southgate Leigh, a highly prominent local surgeon. He opened the facility with roughly 30 to 35 beds and named it in honor of his mother, Sarah Leigh.
The Historic Location: The original hospital stood along the picturesque waterfront of Mowbray Arch, overlooking \"The Hague\" inlet in Norfolk’s historic Ghent neighborhood.
Ahead of Its Time: The 1903 facility was famous for being decades ahead of standard hospital architecture, integrating early concepts of sanitation, safety, and comfort:
Rounded Interior Corners: Built completely without hard 90-degree corners in the rooms and hallways to prevent the accumulation of dust, dirt, and bacteria.
Early Climate Control: Utilized an innovative basement-based air cooling and ventilation system.
Safety Features: Outfitted with advanced early fire-suppression technology and sound-dampening insulation.
Transition to Leigh Memorial (1936): In 1936, the facility transitioned from a privately owned doctor\'s clinic into a non-profit community institution, officially renaming itself Leigh Memorial Hospital. It grew into a cornerstone of Norfolk medical care and was widely recognized for its robust nursing school program.
Evolution & The Move
In 1972, Leigh Memorial Hospital merged with Norfolk General Hospital to create Medical Center Hospitals—the entity that would eventually rebrand as Sentara Health.
To accommodate a booming population, the hospital officially left its historic Ghent waterfront site in 1977, relocating to its current 274-bed acute care campus at 830 Kempsville Road in Norfolk, where it operates today under the name Sentara Leigh Hospital.
The Fate of the Original Building: The beautiful 1903 structure on Mowbray Arch remained a neighborhood landmark for years after the medical staff moved out. Tragically, on July 24, 1986, just as the building was slated for a residential redevelopment project, a massive fire broke out. It took over 100 firefighters to control the blaze, and the historic structure was completely lost. Today, private residences occupy the waterfront site where it once stood.

To assist with diagnostics and evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, various measures of physiological integrity were utilised to obtain numerous vital coefficients, \"especially in relation to the integrity and efficiency of the blood, the heart, the lungs, the liver, the kidneys, stomach, intestines, brain, nerves and muscles.
Physical training
Physical exercise was an important part of the Battle Creek system, facilitating not just the improvement of muscle tone, but also of posture, respiration, and of circulation and the facilitation of anabolic and catabolic functions enabled by circulatory processes. Exercise included such components as postural, calisthetics, gymnastics, swimming, and passive methods such as mechanotherapy, vibrotherapy, mechanical massage.
Food required careful prescriptive preparation, with care also taken to ensure appetiveness and palatability were recognized. The diet lists included \"scores of special dishes and hundreds of special food preparations, each of which has been carefully studied in relation to its nutritive and therapeutic properties,\" with the diet lists used \"by the physicians in arranging the diet prescriptions of individual patients.
