Amazing Spider-Man #31 CGC 5.0 1st Gwen Stacy Harry Osborn OW/W Ditko 1965 For Sale

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31 — Peter Parker goes to college and meets the rest of his life.
Cover-dated December 1965, "If This Be My Destiny...!" sends Peter Parker to Empire State University, and into the same classes as Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn, both making their first appearances here. Peter, distracted by Aunt May's sudden illness, comes across as stuck-up, and they take it personally. It's about the most awkward possible introduction to the two people who would shape the next decade of the book.
The issue also debuts Professor Miles Warren, a background science teacher here, who would much later be unmasked as the Jackal. And it opens the Master Planner saga, the three-issue run (#31–33) that builds to the famous sequence in #33 of Spider-Man pinned under tons of machinery. This is Stan Lee and Steve Ditko at the peak of their partnership. Ditko would be off the title within a year.
The long view gives the issue its weight. Harry's father turns out to be Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, and Gwen's story ends in #121 at the Goblin's hands. Both halves of that tragedy walk on stage here, on page one of Peter's college years, under a cover dedicated to "the great new Marvel breed of reader."
This copy grades CGC 5.0, Very Good/Fine, with off-white to white pages, a strong page grade for a sixty-year-old newsstand book. The red cover is bright and presents well.
