  • \"ARIES THE RAM, March 21 — April 20: This token was struck in the year 323 B.C., the year of the death of Alexander the Great. It is a tetradrachm, showing the head of Alexander with the horns of Aries. On the reverse is Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. Athena is seated, holding a nike or victory. This token was the first to bear the likeness of a human and was circulated in Thrace after being ordered by Lipimachus, a great general of Alexander\'s, who later became king of Thrace.\"
  • \"TAURUS THE BULL, April 21 — May 22: This token, a tetradrachm, which circulated in Gela in southern Sicily, in 485 B.C., shows the forepart of a manheaded bull. The token was struck at the Treasury of the Gelenses at Olympia. Its depiction of the manheaded bull symbolizes the \"personified river,\" the Gela River. The city of Gela was founded in the seventh century, B.C., by the Cretans and Rhodians. The symbolism of Taurus, carried over by the Cretans, no doubt comes from the mythological tale that Taurus, the snow white bull, carried Europe to Crete.\"
  • \"GEMINI THE TWINS, May 23 — June 21: The wrestlers shown on the face of this token represent Castor and Pollux, the Gemini twins of classical mythology They were two of the Argonauts from the famed ship Argo, which sailed the forofferden seas of the ancient gods. The obverse side of the token identifies itself as probably being struck in ancient Sicily by the triskelion or three-legged symbol shown next to the warrior with the sling.\"
  • \"CANCER THE CRAB, June 22 — July 22: This token , struck in the Sicilian city of Akragas in the fifth century, B.C., probably carried the picture of a crab to commemorate the city\'s wealth gleaned from its location on the Mediterranean Sea. In classical mythology, the Crab pinched Heracles\' foot when he was fighting the Hydra or water monster. The crab was crushed, but the god Juno later placed it in the skies.\"
  • \"LEO THE LION, July 23 — August 22: Valia, on the east coast of Italy, was the place of origin for this stater, struck in 400 B.C. This token was probably struck to commemorate a battle, as one side shows the helmeted head of Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and Beauty, and the reverse shows the lion, a mythological symbol of the fierce beast of the Nemean forest, slain by Hercules as one of his twelve labors.\"
  • \"VIRGO THE VIRGIN, August 23 — September 22: Struck in Carthage in 340 B.C., this stater depicts the head of the goddess on one side. The reverse pictures a horse standing in front of palm trees. In mythology, Virgo was the winged goddess of the harvest, who descended to the earth during this season to preside over the work.\"
  • \"LIBRA THE BALANCE, September 23 — October 22: This token was in circulation in Rome between 284 and 308 B.C. The head of the Emperor Maximiamis is shown on one side. The reverse is a classic portrayal of Libra balancing the scales. The constellation, Libra, was probably so named because, in ancient times, the days and nights were equal with the autumnal equinox in this constellation. Today, of course, this portrayal of Libra is identified with the departments of Justice.\"
  • \"SAGITTARIUS THE ARCHER, November 22 — December 22: The archer is clearly shown on the reverse side of this token , struck at the colonial mint of the Romans in Alexandria, Egypt in 138 A.D. The bust of Antininus Pius shows on the face of the token. In mythological diagram, this constellation, known as Sagittarius, depicted the centaur Chiron, whom Hercules killed in battle.\"
  • \"SCORPIO THE SCORPION, October 23 — November 21: This token, the Denarius of M. Aemilius Scaurus and Publius Plautius, was struck in Rome about 58 B.C. One side shows King Aretas of the Nabathean Arabians keeling beside his camel in submission to Rome. The reverse is a classical picture of the mythological Scorpio whose sting caused the death of the mighty hunter Orion. It also stung the horses of Phaethon on his disastrous ride in the sun chariot.\"
