A pairfor one money"Across the River, Ise of Hope",J.N. Wilson, Savannah, Georgia.****Little HistoryFirst Settled: 1736Original Settlers: Settled three years after Savannah’s 1733 founding by Noble Jones (who built Wormsloe Plantation on the south end), Henry Parker, and John Fallowfield.

Colonial Purpose: Originally established by General James Oglethorpe's colonists as a strategic military outpost and inland port along the Skidaway River to guard Savannah against potential Spanish invasion from the south.

1840s–1850s (Resort Era): As the threat of invasion subsided, former plantation lands along the river bluff were subdivided. Wealthy Savannah families began building riverfront cottages on the island to escape summer heat, humidity, and yellow fever epidemics in the city center.

Post-Civil War & Railroads (1870s): By 1870, the Savannah, Skidaway & Seaboard Railroad connected downtown Savannah directly to Isle of Hope. This made the riverfront an immensely popular resort area for day-trippers and tourists, which coincided with when Savannah photographers like J.N. Wilson actively documented the area for stereoviews.

Early 20th Century: The island transformed into a year-round residential suburb featuring riverfront homes along Bluff Drive, historic churches, and famous local attractions like Barbee's Turtle Farm.
