2 Vintage Mexican Popotillo Straw Folk Art Mosaic Wall Plaques 4.5" Square 1968 For Sale

Two small, 4.5" squareMexican popotillo straw paintings, also called Mexican straw mosaic or popote art.Tiny pieces of dyed grass/straw, carefully arranged to create the buildings, sky, street, figures, and architectural details on thin plywood. The two paintings appear to show the same artwork from two views, rather than two separate paintings. One painting features a man and the other a woman. Why are these pieces interesting?

Mexican village/street scene — colorful adobe-style buildings, a church-like central building, and a walking figure.

Very fine straw work — the individual pieces are remarkably small and consistently arranged.

Hand-burned/pyrographic wooden panel surrounding the artwork.

Repeated heart motif around all four edges. That's a charming folk-art decorative treatment.

Original hanging eyelet at the top.

No frame. The carved/burned wooden panel is part of the original artwork and gives the illusion of a frame.

The bottom issigned or marked “Mexico”.

These paintings were a birthday gift in July 1968 as signed on the back of the mosaic of the man.
Come from a non-smoking home with a dog.
