1944 WWII Official Navy Photo w/ Names \"Admiral Mitscher & Staff\" USS Lexington For Sale

This is an original silver gelatin U.S. Navy photograph of Rear Admiral Marc A. Mitscher and the staff of Commander Carrier Division 3. The group is posed on the flight deck of USS Lexington (CV-16) in front of a Grumman F6F Hellcat,numbered 31.
The reverse has a stamped \"CV-16,\" negative number 1276, and the date 10 Mar 1944. A handwritten caption names all 17 sitters.
The date places this photograph two days after Mitscher moved his command to Lexington. The flight deck setting is probably Majuro lagoon in the Marshall Islands.Notable figures include:
Marc A. Mitscher (1887-1947). He was a pioneer in naval aviation who became one of the leading U.S. carrier commanders of World War II. He commanded USS Hornet during the Doolittle Raid and Battle of Midway, then led the Fast Carrier Task Force (TF 58/38) across the Pacific in 1944-45. His awards included three Navy Crosses, three Navy Distinguished Service Medals, and the Legion of Merit. He died on February 3, 1947, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Truman J. Hedding. He was a naval aviator who became Chief of Staff, Commander Carrier Division Three, in 1943, participating in raids on the Gilberts, Kwajalein, Marianas, Truk, and Palau. He later commanded USS Valley Forge (CV-45) and served on the Joint Staff before retiring in 1959 as a vice admiral.
Charles D. \"Don\" Griffin (1906-1996). He was a naval aviator who became operations officer for Task Force 58 in 1943 and was detached in 1944 to plan Pacific operations with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He later commanded the Seventh Fleet, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, and Allied Forces Southern Europe, retiring as a four-star admiral in 1968.
