1930s New York Overseas Chinese Aviation Salvation Biplane 8x10 Photo, MDC Print
Aitken Collection, MDC St. Louis Archival ReprintDESCRIPTIONAn 8x10 archival photograph from the McDonnell Douglas Corporation's St. Louis photo library, printed from an earlier negative and company stamped December 1979, part of a large collector's binder assembled by Donald and Barbara Aitken of Irvine, California, the Aitken Collection. Scanned at 600dpi so every detail is visible before you buy. The photograph documents an open cockpit biplane of the late 1920s to early 1930s, powered by an uncowled radial engine, riding on large wire spoke main wheels, with wire braced multi bay wings and a single rounded vertical fin. Painted in large white characters along the fuselage side is a Chinese inscription that reads, in its original right to left order, "New York... Overseas Chinese... Aviation to Save the Nation," a slogan tied to the fundraising campaigns overseas Chinese communities across the US ran in the early 1930s to purchase airplanes and train pilots for China's fledgling air force in the years following the 1931 Mukden Incident and the 1932 fighting at Shanghai. The rightmost portion of the inscription falls just outside the frame of this print, so the full name of the sponsoring group is not completely legible, but the core phrase "Overseas Chinese Aviation to Save the Nation" reads clearly across the fuselage. This is a photographic print produced by MDC in 1979 from an earlier archive negative, not an original period press pull, and it is represented and priced accordingly as a later company reprint. Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives.
