1861 Civil War Patriotic Cover - Winfield Scott, Jeff Davis, John G. Wells
Scarce 1861 Civil War patriotic cover featuring a satirical political cartoon of Union General Winfield Scott and Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Printed in blue, the cartoon depicts Winfield Scott as the large dog at left, wearing a collar marked “SCOTT,” with the United States flag, artillery and cannonballs behind him. Scott says “DON’T SEE IT!” Opposite him, the smaller dog marked “DAVIS” represents Confederate President Jefferson Davis, calling “BIG THING BIG THING.” Between the two is the prize marked “WASHINGTON,” representing Washington, D.C.
The Wisconsin Historical Society holds an example of this same design in its Civil War illustrated-envelope collection, dates it to 1861, and attributes it to John G. Wells.
Addressed to Miss Pauline Miller, Worcester, Massachusetts.
This envelope was apparently genuinely mailed. A faint partial circular postmark remains near the upper portion of the cover. The envelope was opened along the right edge, and the postage stamp appears to have fallen off or become detached, leaving the postal marking incomplete. The exact originating post office has not been determined.
Despite the missing stamp and opened right edge, the important 1861 Scott-Davis political cartoon is complete, sharp and highly presentable, making this an appealing example of Civil War political satire and Union patriotic postal history.
