1775 Revolutionary War Letter Ensign Nehemiah Field Bunker Hill Boston Siege:
$19995.00

ORIGINAL 1775 REVOLUTIONARY WAR MANUSCRIPT LETTER — ATTRIBUTED TO ENSIGN NEHEMIAH FIELD — BUNKER HILL / BOSTON
Offered here is an exceptional early American handwritten letter dated July 22, 1775, only approximately five weeks after the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17, 1775) and during the opening months of the Siege of Boston.
The letter is attributed to Ensign Nehemiah Field, whose Revolutionary War military service is documented in historical records. Published Rhode Island military records identify Nehemiah Field as an Ensign in Captain Jeremiah Olney's Fourth Company, Colonel Daniel Hitchcock's Regiment, Army of Observation, 1775.
The letter begins “Ever Honored Father” and contains contemporary discussion of military events in the Boston/Bunker Hill period. References within the letter appear to concern Bunker Hill, Boston, military officers and troops, casualties, and boats/barges, among other wartime subjects.
Because portions of the nearly 250-year-old handwriting are difficult to decipher, these references are described conservatively and the photographs should be examined carefully. A complete scholarly transcription has not yet been performed.
Preliminary transcription / identifiable portions include:
• “Ever Honored Father …”
• A reference appearing to read “Bunker Hill”
• Discussion concerning military activity, officers/troops and killed or wounded men
• References appearing to concern boats/barges and activity in the Boston area
• Dated July 22, 1775
This document has descended with a substantial family collection containing early American, Civil War and later military correspondence and historical material.
IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTION INFORMATION:
I am offering this document as attributed to Ensign Nehemiah Field based upon the document, associated family material and historical research. I have not obtained third-party manuscript authentication, and prospective buyers should make their own determination from the photographs and research provided.
I am also not representing this letter as having been written during the Battle of Bunker Hill itself. The Battle of Bunker Hill occurred June 17, 1775; this letter is dated July 22, 1775. It is contemporary post-Bunker Hill / Siege of Boston-era correspondence.
The letter is currently framed. It exhibits age-related toning, staining, folds, fading and other wear consistent with an approximately 250-year-old manuscript. Please enlarge and examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
