Lot of TWO related original amateur stereoview cards from Kansas, dated January 3, 1911, with one card featuring an exceptional period photograph of a woman with an ornate Harwood six-string guitar associated with J.W. Jenkins' Sons of Kansas City.
Both stereoview cards show closely related views of the same interior family birthday scene. Muriel, identified as 3 years old, is seated at the table with her baby brother Willard during her January 3, 1911 birthday celebration. The two cards capture slightly different views/exposures of the scene.
One of the two stereoview cards is DOUBLE-SIDED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS. On its reverse is an outdoor family group with a woman prominently holding an extremely ornate Harwood guitar associated with J.W. Jenkins' Sons. The six-string guitar has elaborate decoration and inlay along the fingerboard, headstock, soundhole and perimeter of the body. It is a conventional six-string Harwood guitar and not a harp guitar.
The reverse of the SECOND stereoview card contains extensive handwritten family information describing the birthday scene and identifying the children. The notation identifies Muriel as 3 years old and Willard as her baby brother and discusses details visible in the photograph, including Muriel's doll, the birthday cake, candy hanging from the ceiling lamp and the piano visible in the adjoining room. The writer also recalls practicing early piano lessons on that instrument.
The interior photographs provide a fascinating look inside an early-20th-century Kansas home, with period furniture, table setting, dolls and toys, fern, framed pictures, curtains and other household furnishings.
A particularly interesting pair of documented amateur stereoviews combining a 1911 Kansas family birthday celebration, extensive handwritten family history and an outstanding period image of a highly ornate Jenkins/Harwood guitar.
LOT INCLUDES TWO ORIGINAL STEREOVIEW CARDS exactly as pictured.
Both show age-related toning, staining, edge and corner wear, along with creasing/cracking and other wear visible in the photographs.
