Excellent early original large format photograph of world treasure Hagia Sophia of Constantinople, now Istanbul, before the automobile age. I will guess the photo was taken about 1890-1900.
Likely a contact print from a very large negative.
Beautifully hand-colored, very sharp, and showing vivid detail.
Gold leaf lettering on lower left of photograph reads \"6400. P.Z. - CONSTANTINOPLE. STE. SOPHIE.\"
Mounted on fiberboard, as acquired, with some glue showing on the fiberboard edges.
There are some minor marks, in the form of elongated indentations, which only show when the photo is tilted to reflect bright light. They do not show in the above high resolution photos.
Since its construction in the year 537, the Hagia Sophia has had a long, rich history, having been at different times a Greek cathedral, a Roman Catholic cathedral, a mosque, a museum, and now again a mosque.
The photograph measures about 9 by 6 5/8 inches (23 by 16.8 cm). Fiberboard measures about 10 1/4 by 7 5/8 inches (26 by 19.3 cm).
ARTIQS lettering which shows on the listing photos is not on the actual photo being sold in this listing.
The third image above shows the back of the fiberboard.
