THOMAS WENTWORTHHIGGINSON (1823-1911) SIGNED SLIP, “Thos. Wentworth Higginson”, 4.5 x 1.75,by the American Unitarian minister, author, abolitionist, politician, andsoldier. He was a member of the SecretSix or the Secret Committee of Six, the group of men who secretly fundedthe 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry by abolitionist John Brown. All six had beeninvolved in the abolitionist cause prior to their meeting John Brown, and hadgradually become convinced that violence was necessary in order to end Americanslavery. Brown was planning to capture weapons from a Federal armory atHarper’s Ferry and lead a slave rebellion in the South. His efforts failed andhe was captured and eventually executed. Duringthe Civil War the 1st South Carolina Volunteers has the distinction of being thefirst black regiment to fight. Following the war Higginson wrote about his experiences withAfrican-American soldiers and devoted much of the rest of his life fighting for the rights of freed-people,women and other disfranchised people. This large, bold signature is in finecondition, with one crease touching one letter. . #13089
