VeryRare Marked & IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR Cavalry Fife, Marked "2 U.S. Cavalry"

DESCRIPTION:Scansshow it all.....very nice Civil War IDENTIFIED ebony fife. Has a great look.

Best part is that it is a CAVALRY item, and especially rare being a U.S. CAVALRY REGIMENT. THE 2nd regiment was recalled to the Eastern Theatre and designated on Aug. 3, 1861 as the Second Cavalry Regt. One of the commanders was Wesley Merritt, a well-known Cavalry leader.

You could play 3 distinct octaves or 24 notes from a fife. They had a great, shrill sound for use for music on the march or in battle, and were popular regimental battle instruments.

For much of the war, the regiment was a key part of either the "Reserve Brigade" or the "Regular Brigade" of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac and served in numerous campaigns and battles. They fought in numerous battles, including the Siege of Yorktown, the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Spotsylvania, and the Battle of Cold Harbor.

At Fredericksburg, sgt. Hagan of the 2nd and a small group of troopers held a Confederate cavalry brigade at bay, covering the Union retreat across the river. Action was completed without the loss of a man or a horse and he was awarded the regiment's first Medal of Honor. The 2nd was also present during the Stoneman Raid. During the battle of Kelly's Ford, the 2nd became the first Union Cavalry regt to engage CSA Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry in a head-to-head charge, hurting Stuart's reputation in the eyes of Southern leadership, just 3 weeks before the Battle of Gettysburg. Leading up to Gettysburg the 2nd fought a continuous recon and counter-recon with Stuart's cavalry until the 2 armies met. Here the regt dismounted and skirmished the Confederates in a delaying action until the main Union force could reach the battlefield.

Regt. also had significant roles at Trevilian Station, Winchester, many charges. Captured the flag of the 32nd Va. Cav and earned 14 battle streamers and 5 medals of honor.

Very good condition overall. One of the ends has been replaced, probably from a different fife. One is the original German silver, the replacement is brass. Still looks great, and has a great history association!!

A GREAT ITEM FOR A CAMP, CAVALRY, OR OFFICER'SMUSICAL COLLECTION OR DIORAMA.
