Description Offered for Sale is this RARE Large Hillier and Company Custom Perfumers Lot filled with Advertising Items such as a Bottle, Boxes, Unused Boxes, Test Strips, Checks, Letterhead, Business Cards, Glossy photos, Correspondence with Mademoiselle Magazine and eventual Publication of their Story in same, magazine articles and advertising cards. I have searched this individual and fragrance and could find very little about either (exception being the articles included and detailed below). I will outline the extensive lot below in detail.
Carolyn M Brown (owner): Carolyn Brown ran Public Opinion Clearing House in 1948. After feeling the opinion survey market was exhausted she switched her business to perfumes by Hillier (her husband's middle name). She commented that it was easier to sell merchandise than service. The switch is less surprising since most of her surveys were about cosmetics and people's reactions to them.
Carolyn and Steven (her husband) worked together on the Manhattan Project prior to Carolyn starting the public opinion polling business.
Items included are as follows:
- Hillier Cologne Supreme Box, new Unused / Unlabeled Cologne Bottle (label attached to Mademoiselle Letter listed below)
Glossy Photos - 3 large 8 x 10 of Cologne
- Glossy Photos - 3 small, 1 5 x 5, 1 4 1/4" x 2 1/2", 1 4" x 2" all photos of product offerings
- Mademoiselle Letter 8/8/1950 from Assistant Editor to Carolyn Brown acknowledging receipt of items to be photographed. Cologne Label attached
- Copy of October 1950 Mademoiselle Magazine with article showing M-M-M-M-M Cologne and bio on Carolyn Brown (page 137 continued on page 171)
- 5 Magazine Articles, another copy of pages 137 & 171, December 1949 page out of Vogue displaying an ad for Perfume Traveler by Hillier, Page from C&T Business Paper highlighting the Hillier Perfume Traveler, Page displaying a photo of Steven and Carolyn Brown detailing their time working together on the Manhattan Project and later Carolyn starting Public Opinion Clearing House
- 2 Blank Letter Head pages stating the company name and address
- 5 Blank Company Checks 479 through 482
- 2/3rd's Box of M-M-M-M-M by Hillier Business Cards
- 15 New Unfolded Cologne Boxes (13 red label, 2 black label)
- 6 Printed Index Size Cards detailing Fall Fashion Fragrance and Wine of Romance Fragrance, both by Hillier
- Large Bag of Perfume de Hiller Test Strips (unused)
This Lovely Rare collection Hillier and Company items would make a Great Addition to any Vintage Perfume Collection.
Condition: - Overall Good General Condition - Items show some signs of wear from storage. Most items are new / unused so the only issues are those that come with 70 years of storage. Magazine Binding in Poor Condition. Please see the pictures to view the condition of the items for yourself.
