RAILROAD MAN & PINKERTON DETECTIVES ? CDV PHOTO by F.H. LARRABEE, HILLSBORO, ILL: $145.00
We are offering an original CDV photograph of three men in a horse-drawn buckboard wagon outside a stately home. Photograph is by F. H. Larrabee, Hillsboro, Illinois. One man appears to be a railroad man, possibly a conductor, dressed in a uniform of a long coat and a high, visored cap. The other two men, with beards and mustaches, although dressed fairly nicely, are wearing clothes that appear to be a little scruffy, not having the refined look of a gentleman. One man sits in the front holding the horse's reins, while the other two stand in the back posing for the camera. **NOTE** - The possibility came to mind that the two bearded men were Pinkerton detectives, by the way they looked. Pinkerton's NationalDetective Agency was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1853. The agency's detectives worked primarily for clients in business and industry, with much of their work performed for railroad companies like the Illinois Central Railroad. WE WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT WE ARE NOT STATING WITH CERTAINTY THAT THESE MEN WERE PINKERTON. There's also the possibility they were tough men representing the railroad's interests. We cannot know for sure.
