RailroadTreasures offers the following item: LBSC His Life and Locomotives by Brian Hollingsworth Dust Jacket 1982 108 Pages LBSC His Life and Locomotives by Brian Hollingsworth Dust Jacket 1982 108 Pages SIGNED BY Brian HollingsworthTo a man who has spent most of his working life and a good deal of his spare time with small steam locomotives, it is an honour to be invited to write this foreword to Brian Hollingsworth\'s biography of \'Curly\' Lawrence, a giant of universal renown in the world of miniature railway engines. I first read `LBSC\', as I knew him then, in the 1920s when I was at school, by borrowing the \'Model Engineer\' from the Science Master and I have read this publication since those days - even through the period of the last war, when I was an engine driver on the standard gauge, serving with the Royal Engineers - and I must have read just about every word that he wrote for \'the paper\', as he always called it. After over twenty years of reading and enjoying his brilliant writings, I finally met him in 1948, when he invited me to his home at Purley Oaks to drive \'Jeanie Deans\', his 3\' ins gauge Webb 3 Cylinder compound, which had so intrigued me when he described it in the \'Model Engineer\' and we remained firm friends until his death in 1967. I ran most of his engines at Purley over the years and among my treasured possessions is a letter from \'Curly\' in which he wrote, \'Come and have another run when you feel like it. I\'ve plenty of engines!\'He visited the Barlow family on a number of occasions. A lover of children but denied them himself, our children helped him over his first visit to New Romney as with his shy and retiring nature, he had a terror of visiting strange places. I am sure that the presence of our son and daughter made a big difference to his visits when he was always accompanied by his wife, Mabel, a cheerful, friendly person.Henry Greenly and others had shown the way with their excellent model locomotive work in the larger gauges but it was `LBSC\' who proved what could be done in the smaller sizes, so that coal burning, passenger hauling locomotives on 21/2ins gauge became commonplace. They only became commonplace because of his real genius in describing how to build similar little machines to his own, so bringing their construction within the practical range of many people who would never have tackled such a job in other circumstances. From this work has grown not only the vast number of small working steam locomotives in the world today but the development of Societies dedicated to the hobby and to the building of splendid, continuous passenger carrying tracks many of which are in existence, I feel sure, solely due to the influence of `LBSC\'. So numerous have such tracks become that it is now possible to visit several in this country in the course of a single day and the pleasure that is thus given to an enormous number of people is immeasurable; a truly wonderful memorial to a great man.Because of \'Curly\'s\' unusual make-up and his reclusive style of life for many years, writing his biography calls for a man not only with literary talent but also possessing gentleness and sensitivity in his nature. An engineer by profession and a passionate lover of the steam locomotive in all its sizes, Brian Hollingsworth, author of a number of books on railway matters, is just the man to execute what could not have been an easy task but it is a book that had to be written to remind us all, young and not so young, of \'Curly\'s\' enormous achievements.
