Boake Carter Signed Type 1 Photo and TLS

Two interesting pieces signed Harold Thomas Henry \"Boake\"Carter (1898-1944) with ties to a multitude of significant 30’s and 40’s Americana. Carter a journalist and broadcaster who rose to fame with his coverage of the Lindbergh Kidnapping after which he became one of the more familiar albeit controversial voices and political commentators of the 1930’s with sponsorship deals with Lucky Strike, Philco Radios, and General Foods.

In the mid 30’s he had more listeners than any other broadcaster. His Broadcasts were distributed by CBS and he voiced reels for Hearst-Metrotone. Carter was alsothe first broadcaster to do a televised sports interview when he interviews Connie Mack in 37.

Carter was a staunch criticizer of FDR, his New Deal, and the Congress of Industrial Organizations. In 1938 FDR’s White House successfully pressured his removal from CBS and the dissolution of his marketing deal with general General Foods. With his removal there was no longer a popular radio voice opposing FDR’s foreign policy.

In the years leading up to his death Carter joined a “British Israelite” cult led by Moses Guibbory. After his death two books were written one about the circumstances surrounding his death by author Stewart Robb “The Strange Death of Boake Carter” and the other by author and fellow cult member David Horowitz “Thirty-Three Candles” recounting his final years with Carter and Guibbory.
