This Medal dates from the saint's beatification in1675.Please double click the picture as there are many other pictures behind itthat will appear. These are devotional medals from Convents we work with aswell as donor collector estates that have gifted their medals to us to help theconvents we work with. Some items may have been cleaned or polished beforetheir arrival, by their last caretaker. Their use is for personal devotion.

This medal is one of several from the estate collectionof Mexico Bishop Pascual Diaz. The Most Reverend Pascual Díaz y Barreto, SJ(June 22, 1876 -- May 19, 1936) was a Mexican prelate of the Roman CatholicChurch, who served as Archbishop of Mexico City from June 22, 1929, until hisdeath in 1936.

VATICAN MINT XVII CENTURY BLESSED CATHERINE OFGENOA"SALUS INFIRMORUM" SALVATION OF THE SICK.MEASURES: 1.75 INCHESLONGMATERIAL: BRONZEWEIGHT: 25 GRAMS Catherine of Genoa (Caterina FieschiAdorno, 1447 -- 15 September 1510) was an Italian Roman Catholic saint andmystic, admired for her work among the sick and the poor and remembered becauseof various writings describing both these actions and her mystical experiences.She was a member of the noble Fieschi family and spent most of her life and hermeans serving the sick, especially during the plague which ravaged Genoa in1497 and 1501. She died in that city in 1 510. Catherine's writings wereexamined by the Holy Office and declared to contain doctrine that would alonebe enough to prove her sanctity, and she was accordingly beatified in 1675 byPope Clement X.

The medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.This book has chapters (outlined in the tableof contents), describing each of the categories of medals, their possible placeof pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where they were made. Werecommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from this period acquirea copy of this book.
