There is a continuous need for information which will indicate the types of German concrete fortifications that may be encountered, the expected frequency of occurrence of each type, and the effectiveness of our standard weapons against them. This information is required for the development of new weapons and ammunition, for the determination of the requirements for various weapons, and for the development of means and methods for the destruction of these concrete fortifications. At the time the field work for this report was made, the only German concrete fortifications available for study were those in Normandy. It was decided to make a fairly detailed study of the types of concrete fortifications that existed in the Omaha Area, Utah Area, and in the immediate vicinity of Cherbourg. It is believed that the strong points studied in the above areas are representative German strongpoints. Section I: purpose and scope of report. Section II: German defenses. Section III: camouflage of German concrete fortifications. Section IV: description of common types of concrete fortifications and representative strongpoints. Section V: effect of artillery fire on German concrete fortifications. Appendices: A- report of Combined Operations Headquarters' special observer party on beach and coastal defenses in the Cherbourg area; B- report of artillery officer, 83rd Division, on effect of artillery fire during assault on St. Malo; and C- map, key to strongpoints.
