1859 \'Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York\', by D.T. ValentineFold Out Maps & Engravings
A fantastic book compiled in part as a record of the doings of the city government, and that\'s what earlier versions are limited to, but with the arrival of Mr. Valentine to the project it became an exposition of the already long history of the City of New York. He dug through dusty, and no doubtmusty, piles of records thatsat undisturbed in the city\'s archives. The last map, in color, was an old Dutch map adapted by the new English owners to indicate the plans the Duke of York had for his latest holdings. Another great find was two proclamations by King George I. The first is a declaration of loyalty to the King in the wake of an invasion from Holland, the Dutch again, in support of the Stuart rightful heir to the throne, James II of Scotland, who was also the son of the previous monarch, James VI of England. This began the basically religious wars that were to darken the British Isle for decades to come. The next proclamation gets right to the heart of it, a royal declaration that Catholic High Mass, the \"Transubstantiation\" of the breadand wine served at the mass into the actual body and blood of Christ, is false. This was a representative issue of the schism between the Catholic Church and the differentgroups of Protestants that aimed to separate Britain as a whole from the authority of the Pope and the Church of Rome.
There is so much history in this book that I couldn\'t begin to do it justice here, and what\'s more is thecontemporaneous story of New York, represented by beautiful steel plateengravings and maps. The big story of the day was Central Park, that was just beginning construction around 1859. There are a few plates depicting this enormous project. The situation in the city is recorded and explained in depth, from police to fire protection, hospitals, quarantine areas for the many ill with transmissible diseases, and orphanages. Many, many orphanages for children, segregated by race and faith, as well as by gender.
Despite all of the cost and effort that went into the preparation of this book, every citizen of New York was allowed a copy, free of charge. It costs a bit more these days, but this genuine 1859 edition is priced reasonably. This book has been reprinted a few times and a beautiful leather edition was published in 1917 that you\'ll see, innocently sold as original, for more than the cost of this actual original. There are condition issues, as noted above and shown in the numerous pictures. This book will be packaged with care and arrive in the same condition that it left in.
