The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was an investigative committee of the United States Congress created to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of American citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having Communist ties. It was used as an instrument of intimidation and oppression for Americans engaged in promoting racial and social justice. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. (SNCC, SCLC) and prominent Vietnam War protesters such as Abbie Hoffman (Yippies) were among it's primary targets. The committee would start its questioning of subpoenaed American citizens with the question: Are you now or ever have been a member of the Communist Party? The committee was unceremoniously abolished in 1975.
