THE LAST PRECIOUS FEW PIPES
After listing my pipe collection on , it’s time to part with the favorites - my Ashtons by Bill Taylor, my Ferndowns by Les Wood, and a few other high end pieces. Any of these that don’t sell, I will gladly keep.
Stunning Ferndown Pipe in a rare bent Author / Bulldog shape. Sometimes called a “Rhodesian.” Beautiful ** (two star size) in the Relief Grain Bark finish with a Reo Smooth finish around the bowl top. Large for a two-star. Original L&JS Sterling band.
True Mint condition.
Ferndown pipes were made by the legendary British pipe-maker Leslie ‘Les’ Wood, along with his wife Dolly. Both Les and Dolly previously worked for Dunhill, where Les developed his reputation as Britain’s premier pipe silversmith, as well as a premier pipe carver.
Ferndown pipes are highly coveted by pipe-smokers due to their superlative craftsmanship, whose bowls are oil-cured and which typically feature beautiful silverwork. Sadly, Les and Dolly retired from pipe-making in 2016, making Ferndown pipes scarce – and precious.
This pipe combines the Bark and Reo finishes. ‘Reo’ was Ferndown’s signature red-brown smooth finish, and my personal favorite. It’s a beautiful, smooth, chestnut stain, typically with some of Les’s trademark silverwork, as this one has. This one is also an Author, which is a rare Ferndown shape. The pipe is large, at six inches in length, but not too heavy, at around 2.8 ounces.
The condition is great. Calling it mint is justified. There are no imperfections.
