Vintage 1970’s Pacific Island Hand Carved Wood Wooden Log Slit Drum 20.5” For Sale

We are delighted to offer this rare vintage hand carved slit drum from the Pacific Islands, circa 1970. Known as a Pate, it is from the split, or slit drum family. The Pate is a log drum, carved from a hardwood tree branch or trunk. Featuring a carved fish on either side, and decorated on the rim with inlaid abalone, the body of this drum is quite dense. Striking different parts of it produces uniquely distinct sounds. The drum measures approximately 20.5” long x 5.5” high, and weighs approximately 5.75 lbs. It is gently used with wear consistent with age and use.
