ISSUE SYNOPSIS: After inviting HAVOK, POLARIS and MADROX THE MULTIPLE MAN to join the team and being turned down by all three, the X-MEN leave a powerless BANSHEE on Muir Isle and return to the X-Mansion, where PROFESSOR XAVIER awaits, himself just returned from the Shi'Ar Empire. He's not quite himself, and neither is JEAN GREY, who has experiences another of her inexplicable "time-slip" hallucinations. Little do any of them know, however, that the Mansion has been bugged by a new adversary. Cerebro soon alerts the team that a new mutant has just been discovered, and a team of X-Men leave for Illinois to recruit, only to discover that they've been beaten to the punch by EMMA FROST of the Massachusetts Academy. KITTY PRYDE, a teenager, is drawn to the X-Men, and she leaves with STORM, WOLVERINE and COLOSSUS to have a milkshake. There, they are ambushed by troopers from the HELLFIRE CLUB, whom the X-Men eventually overcome only to be taken down by a psychic attack from Emma Frost. They are taken away by more Hellfire troops -- all but Kitty Pryde, who escaped the fray by accident but, now consciously using her powers, she phases into the Hellfire Club's jet, hidden from view and wondering what she can do to free her new friends from this terrible foe. What will become of the uncanny X-Men?!?WithUNCANNY X-MEN#129, creators Chris Claremont and John Byrne began what Claremont has since referred to as their '"DiMaggio Hitting Streak, the run of stories that set the standard for all the followed and defined the book for the following quarter-century, establishing many of the primal conflicts and relationships that are still being mined for stories to this day.”Indeed, he issue was a pure and recognizable instance of comic book magic, a perfected blend of superhero action, nail-biting thriller and soap opera drama all beneath one eye-popping Byrne-illustrated and Austin- inked cover. Its subtly ominous tone primed the reader for the darker days to come, even as its cheerful introduction of its youngest new character, the thirteen-year-old Kitty Pryde, was a thoughtful nod back to the X-Men's original concept as a team of students.
In student terminology, then,UNCANNY X-MEN#129is an A+ achievement for Marvel, and it's a grade that history has never contested. While the importance of the issue's two FIRST APPEARING characters cannot be overstated given how they have evolved in the years since, even the relatively smaller elements of the story are notable. From the dual inspirations for the HELLFIRE CLUB (one being the name of an actual entity from 18th century England and club for upper-class libertines, the other the so-named "Hellfire Club" from the British TV series The Avengers) to WOLVERINE's interest in adult entertainment (and COLOSSUS' naivete to such material) as seen with his perusal of both Hustler and Playboy magazines during the "Malte Shoppe" scene, the substance of the issue is remarkable, especially when held in comparison to most comics published today.
For all these reasons and so many more, we're very proud to offer an outstanding (or as Emma would think/say, an "Uncanny") and eye-popping UNREAD copy of the X-MEN MEGA-KEY that is UNCANNY X-MEN #129, one of the hallmarks of the Claremont/Byrne era and the issue which introduced two of the most important characters inside the X-Mythos.To be sure, this fantastic copy ofUNCANNY X-MEN#129, a highly collectable issue that's become very difficult to find in raw High-Grade, is certain to be the Gem of any collector's longbox. From Marvel's upcomingX-Men comics relaunch, to X-Men '97 and this summer'sDeadpool & Wolverine, Marvel mutants are back and stronger than ever in 2024, with a future that looks both bright and certain to elevate the X-Men to all-new heights in pop culture. We're also including a FREE COPY of the MARVEL FACSIMILE EDITION (2023) ofUncanny X-Men #129 to help you preserve the quality of this Bronze Age key. It's as excellent a contender for Third Party grading as it is a tempting example of four-color magic just begging to be read and devoured.
Truly, there's no better time than the present to give your collection what it deserves. Don't miss the opportunity to bring home this X-MEN gem today!
