Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native Luis Alberto Ortiz (Jochy) was selected in the 8th Round of the 1991 MLB Amateur Draft by the Boston Red Sox, reaching the Major Leagues with that team in 1993 as a Third Baseman. Ortiz played for the Texas Rangers at the Major League level in 1995 and 1996. The following year he was playing in Japanese for the Yakult Swallows. In 1998 Ortiz was with the Omaha Royals (Triple-A franchise of the Kansas City Royals) and in 1999 for the Louisville RiverBats (Triple-A franchise of the Milwaukee Brewers).
In 2000 he played for the Tucson Sidewinders, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
2001 found Luis splitting time between the Ottawa Lynch (Triple-A club for the Montreal Expos), the Winnipeg Goldeneyes of the independent Northern League, and two teams in the Mexican League - the Monterrey Sultanes and the Tabasco Olmecas. He was back with the Ottawa Lynx in 2002, and in 2003 split the season between the Edmonton Trappers (Triple-A franchise of the Expos) and the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A club for the St. Louis Cardinals).
From 2005 through the 2010 season, Luis Ortiz served as the Manager of the Gulf Coast Braves of the Atlanta Braves organization. In 2017 he was the Fielding and Hitting Coordinator for the Major League San Diego Padres. In 2018 he was the Assistant Hitting Coach for the Major League Los Angeles Dodgers. From 2019 to the present, Ortiz has worked as the Major League Hitting Coach for the Texas Rangers.
The Tucson Sidewinders were the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998 through the 2008 season, and subsequently became the Reno Aces.
