Jim Palmer was born on October 15, 1945, in New York City. He was adopted by a wealthy couple when he was two days old and given the name James Alvin Wiesen. He signed with the Orioles in 1963 and made his major league debut in 1965. He pitched a complete-game shutout in the 1966 World Series against the Dodgers, becoming the youngest pitcher to do so. He missed most of the 1967 and 1968 seasons due to injuries butcame back strong in the 1970s. He led the AL in wins three times, ERA twice, and innings pitched four times. He was a six-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove winner. He helped the Orioles win three World Series titles (1966, 1970, 1983) and six AL pennants. He retired in 1984 as the Orioles' all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, shutouts, and games started. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
