• Details include a discussion of routes, along with mapsof Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana,Idaho, Washington,and Oregon.

• Four years after this report was published, the law wasamended by the National Parks and Recreation Act to provide for a newcategory of trail, National Historic Trails, one of which was to be theLewis and Clark trail.
• For reasons outlined in this report,the term "scenic" was not deemed approporiate, and today the trail isknownofficially as the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. It isadministered by the National Park Service and isapproximately 4,900 miles long, extending from Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, to the mouth of the Columbia River, near present dayAstoria, Oregon.
