Matthew Gorst is a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox organization, currently playing for the Portland Sea Dogs. The Portland Sea Dogs are a Minor League Baseball team based in Portland, Maine, that currently plays in the Eastern League. Established in 1994, the Sea Dogs are the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The Boston Red Sox drafted Gorst in 2016 with the 12th pick of the 12th round, 358th overall.
The right-hander was the 462nd-rated player by Baseball America and No. 23 in Georgia after a remarkable season as Georgia Tech’s closer. He allowed only three earned runs while striking out 55 in 28 appearances and 49 innings out of the bullpen, good for a school-record ERA of 0.55. He finished with a 2-1 record and 12 saves. For his Tech career, he had a 6-3 record with 13 saves. Although he was the ace starting pitcher at Johns Creek, he was exclusively a relief pitcher/closer with the Yellow Jackets.
Brian Bannister, Red Sox vice president of pitching development and assistant pitching coach, recently discussed Gorst\'s repertoire. \"He was a closer for Georgia Tech and I liked him because he threw a true cutter as his main pitch,\" Bannister told MassLive.com. \"And he throws a high spin rate, sweeping slider. So it\'s kind of a unique mix. And he\'s added a little changeup over the years. But he really has some funk to him,\" Bannister added. \"He\'s got a nice, little rhythm to his delivery. And then everything he throws breaks. There\'s nothing that\'s straight. And so he gives you a different look. And I think he\'s taken a big step forward this year and utilizing that mix and really attacking guys.\"
In the 2019 season, Gorst has split time between Portand and Pawtucket and is 1-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 16 games pitched. He has held opponents to a .179 batting average and has 17 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. In his minor league career, Gorst is 12-12 with a career 2.35 ERA. He has 15 saves and 162 strikeouts in 188 innings. The future is bright for the Red Sox Prospect!!!
