MARVEL COMICS
Bronze Age Nostalgic Goodness from Marvel, MEGO Toys, Mantlo, Milgrom and The Microverse:THE MICRONAUTS #1 (1979) in High-Grade!
Seizing on the opportunity to enter the new and exploding post-Star Wars: A New Hope toymarketplace while offering a product with its own unique twist, MEGO TOYS' original toy lineTHE MICRONAUTS was born in the mid-to-late 1970s.The line was comprised of futuristic plastic and die-cast metal action figures, whose jointed appendages and torsos could be mixed and matched, usually magnetically, to create any combination of different sci-fi robots and alien creatures. Along with vehicles and playsets, Micronautsfeatured characters such as Acroyear, Biotron, Space Glider, Time Traveler, Force Commander, and the evil Baron Karza and his menacing black stallion, Andromeda.
But Mego didn't stop there. To further capitalize on the immense popularity and appeal of their space-based toys, Mego brought The Micronauts to Marvel Comics, whose experience with the licensed properties Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica was more than enough to seal the deal. Soon, the all-new comic book series,The Micronauts, would become another Marvel success -- as well as a departure from what the publisher had done before.
The heroes -- and assorted villains -- of The Micronauts all hailed from THE MICROVERSE, a realm parallel to the main Marvel Universe and part of Marvel's much larger Multiverse. Unlike the heroes of Marvel's ongoing Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica titles, the opportunity existed for those ofThe Micronauts to potentially interact or crossover with Marvel's mainstay characters... and sooner or later, it definitely would.
With the entire cast of The Micronauts making their Marvel FIRST APPEARANCES in Issue #1, timed to drop just before the Holiday Season in late 1978, the series would enjoy a very respectable two-volume and seven-year run, finally coming to an end in 1986, several years after Mego Toys itself went bankrupt and Hasbro adopted the franchise. Although the future of The Micronauts was, at the time, uncertain, the importance of The Micronauts'past to Marvel cannot be understated.
Without The Micronauts, Marvel's later partnerships (especially with Hasbro) that spawned series like ROM: SPACE KNIGHT, GI JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO, THE TRANSFORMERS and HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE may not ever have come to fruition. More recently, and certainly far more well-known to fans on a global scale, the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may never have succeeded in beating the villain THANOS were it not for the QUANTUM REALM -- the Studios' own moniker forThe Micronauts' Microverse, which could not be referred to specifically as such as the name lied in the purview of Hasbro Toys.
