Extremely rare: Signed by editor Dorthy Norman #37/50 of original 1500 print run.
1/1500 Description STIEGLITZ MEMORIAL PORTFOLIO 1864-1946 18 Reproductions of Photographs by Alfred Stieglitz Tributes - In Memoriam Twice a Year Press, New York 1947 1st Edition by Dorothy S. Norman Printed by Marstin Press Ltd., New York City Unbound reproductions printed by Lakeside Press, Chicago Edition Limited to 1500 Copies Here is the EXTREMELY rare, historic memorial 1947 1st Edition portfolio featuring 18 oversized loose glossy photographic plates, each measuring approximately 12 by 16 inches.
These images are reproductions of Stieglitz works dating from 1887 (Venetian Boy) to 1931 (Equivalent) in a portfolio accompanied by a folio softcover 64-page booklet "Tributes - In Memoriam" introduced by Dorothy Norman. This marvelous folio, also measuring approv. 12 by 16 inches, contains tributes to Stieglitz by the following people: Frank Lloyd Wright, John Marin, Edward Steichen, Lionello Venturi, Duncan Phillips, Paul Strand, Lewis Mumford, Carl Van Vechten, Herbert Read, Edward Weston, Paul Rosenfeld, Ansel Adams, Waldo Frank, Carl Zigrosser, Marianne Moore, Luise Rainer, Arthur Dove, Herbert Seligmann, Leo Stein, Alfred Kreymborg, William Lescaze, Alfred Barr, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Hart Crane, Harold Clurman, Albert Barnes, Edward Alden Jewell, William Milliken,Sherwood Anderson, Angna Enters, Beaumont Newhall, Henry McBride, Gaston Lachaise, Eliot Porter, Jerome Mellquist, Edna Bryner, Philip Goodwin, Dorothy rett, Nancy Newhall, Ernest Bloch, Harold Rugg, Matthew Josephson, Isabel Lachaise, Marjorie Philips, Louis Kalonyme, Rebecca James, Henri Cartier-Bresson, S. MacDonald Wright, Ralph Flint, Mary Lescaze, Herman More, Richard Wright, Lloyd Frankenberg, Erich Kahler, Dorothy Norman, Eleanor Anderson, William Einstein, Andrew Droth, John Stark, Brom Weber, Jennings Tofel, Bertram Hartman, Ernest Guteman, Abraham Walkowitz, Jean Toomer, Marguerite Fischel, Angelo Ravagli, Maude Riley, Gusta Hartman, Renee Arb, Anita Pollitzer and others.
What's equally marvelous is that at the end of this 64 page tribute booklet are reproductions of obituaries of Stieglitz from the New York Herald Tribune , the New York Post , and the New York Times , with subtitles like " Famed Photographer, brought about one-man revolution in camera technique ", or " Was husband of Georgia O'Keeffe ." The photographs are loose and housed in a black portfolio pocket, and the large tribute booklet is also loose. It is in very good condition other than age foxing on the title page and on the very last (back) page, and a minor crease to the lower right corner of the title page. The interior pages are all in fine condition and tightly bound. The biggest condition issue with the portfolio overall is some markings on front cover label and general wear with cardboard covers. The ribbon on the book end section (opposite the spine) is still there and it ties the front and back cover boards on that side.. As such, there is also bending, fabric loss, fraying corner bumping and peeling of the black boards, front and back and all four corners. That said, the interior contents of the portfolio are all there and in very good condition, other than the foxing issues noted. That said, we found not one other Stieglitz portfolio on the market at this time for a comparable price, but, in addition to similar condition issues, several of the photographic reproductions were dampstained and ruined. Whereas, the reproductions in this portfolio are all in very good condition, making this one especially desirable. NOT ex-library; NO markings whatsoever. The portfolio of dark brown/black paper over boards is titled with a light brown paper label pasted to the front board. The brown cover label has some age soiling (shown), but is otherwise intact.
