WW1 German / Prussian Mauser Sg98/05nA Butcher Blade Bayonet & Scabbard 1916 For Sale

Its official designation is \'SEITENGEWEHR 98/05 nA\' (often abbreviated to S98/05 or even \'the Butcher Blade\'), with the 98 referring to the rifle and carbine with which it was used and \'05\' standing for the year it was officially adopted. The nA designates that this is a ‘neue Art’ (new type) as opposed to an ‘alte Art’ (old type) version. This plain pattern model was carried by Infantry and Field Artillery troops.
These nA ‘neue Art’ bayonets are more numerous than the aA ‘alte Art’ variety and are distinguishable from the earlier type by their low eared truncated muzzle ring: steel hilt with a round steel press button and internal spring, two piece 9 grooved wood grips with rectangular oil hole and steel flashguard, secured by two steel screw bolts, steel crossguard with truncated muzzle ring and upswept quillon. Single edged sharpened steel blade with round fullers, the back edge of the blade stamped with Prussian Acceptance and ownership marks (an Imperial Crown over W for Kaiser Wilhelm II) and dated 1916 (16).

The scabbard is the steel version that replaced the leather one in 1915.
This bayonet is in excellent condition for its age. It has a patina, and signs of wear and use. A few of the markings are hard to read, such as the \"Solingen\" under the manufacturer\'s name, which is barely visible. We cannot make out the two Imperial \"fraktur\" acceptance marks stamped on the pommel. If you like your bayonets to exhibit evidence of field use, but still be in good original condition, you would have to go a long way to beat this blade.This item is sold AS IS, so please look at the pictures for more details.
