The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was established by Oliver Winchester on May 22, 1866. What followed was a series of iconic firearms that have shaped US and world history. During WWI Winchester Repeating Arms Company - like virtually all major US companies, expanded manufacturing production to meet the demands of the government. When WWI ended so did all government contracts. To compensate, Winchester systematically expanded its product offering and even had their own stores called logically enough, "Winchester Stores". Winchester produced over 7000 items not gun related. Paint, batteries, tires, flashlights, fishing lures, axes & hatchets, bicycles, and baseball mitts to name just a few. And like all Winchester products of the day, the quality was superb. Winchester later sold their hardware lines to Cotter & Company, the forerunner of True Value.
