White Whore Funniesserved as a parodyof interracial relationships and romances between White women and Black men.Working under the pseudonyms Wiley Spade (cover) and A. Christian Black, Horneand Fuller worked tongues firmly in cheeks on this series, while pulling nopunches with satirical social commentary aimed at all parties. Please NOTE: Comichas some modest spine roll. There is a¼” cut or chip on bottom of cover and firstpage, but does not deter from the overall quality of this comic, that isan above-average condition.

Larry Fuller’sEbon#1 was thefirst titular Black comic book superhero, published by an all Black creativeteam of one. Both the character and its creator are a significant part of Blackcomics history, but Fuller’s path did not go where one might have expected.Ebon never got to save humanity from racism, poverty, and hate in a second orthird issue, but Fuller went on to be a hero in his own right, carving out aspace as one of the few African American creatives in the indie comics scene.Teaming up with Thomas W. “Raye” Horne, the duo formed Ful-Horne Productions in1975 and produced raunchy adult underground comix, including thelegendaryWhite Whore Funnies.

Fuller was introduced to Horne by Gary Arlington,a San Francisco comic shop owner with strong connections in the undergroundcomix scene. Arlington was also the printer and distributor of Ebon #1. Withsuch little representation for African American creatives in indie comics, itwas fortunate that the pair hit it off and became friends and then spent a fewyears learning to work together as business and creative partners. During thistime, they developed a number of characters that encompassed many differentgenres, including Westerns, science fiction, superheroes, and fantasy. All butone of these creations were published.

Instead, their first venture under Ful-HorneProductions in 1975 was calledThe Funny Book. It was a grosslyfatphobic black and white humour comic by Gary Figari, starring a characternamed Lardo. It did not sell well. Fuller later attempted to revive the serieswith two more volumes of The New Funny Book. Figari returned for the secondvolume, with additional comic strips by Dan O’Neill, among others. By the thirdvolume, Fuller attempted to take the book in a whole new direction, but it toofailed to find interest with any particular audience.

Fortunately, in that same year of 1975, Fuller andHorne came out strong withWhite Whore Funnies, the adult titlethat put their name on the adult comics map and even earned them space on pornshop shelves thanks to its explicit content, well-drawn imagery, and itsproduction value. The first issue was 32 pages long, printed on high quality, smooth newsprint. It went on to be reprinted several times and the seriescontinued into 1979, earning itself a #5 in Penthouse Magazine’s July/August1989 ranking of the “13 Dirtiest Most Freaked Out Comix Ever Published.” Factsabout White Whore Funnies No. 1: The book that started everything.Published 1975 in response to rejection and refusal to pay for story alreadycontractually and editorially accepted by another publisher.Pissedme off!Color cover by Wiley Spade from art direction by LarryFuller, 32 pages guts on smooth newsprint. There was alittle store off Bleecker that specialized in underground comics. EveryFriday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest versionjust hitting the shelves. With several of my hippy friends grooving, andlaughing over Comics, we’d sit around that smoke-filled room, sometimes lateinto the night.Fast forward, some fifty years later–my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in theback of our storage locker. It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds ofunderground comics that had only been read once, were in beautifulcondition. It felt like we discovered a pot of gold. We wrote todozens of book and comic stores with a list of our inventory. They said, there was no interest, no market and offered us little to nothing for thecollection. We explained to them that these were complete sets, first editions. To the retail outlets they were worthless, but to us they were priceless. Now we offer them on E-Bay and the collectors are grabbing them up, at our morethan fair and reasonable prices. Many we had universally certified withCGC, so you’ll know we’re trustworthy, reliable and have the best ofservice. Just check the response and reviews to know we’re honest andresponsible. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and hopeyou buy them now while they still are available. First come, firstserve. Thank you again for your time and interest.
