Vintage Shapleigh Diamond Edge 18\" DE6 Size Corrugated Plane Very Good For Sale

For sale is a Vintage Stanley Made Norvell Shapleigh Hardware Diamond Edge DE 6 No. 6 Size 18\" Long x 2-7/8\" Wide Corrugated Bottom Hand Plane with Very Nice Hardwood Handle and hardwood front knob. The manufacturer appears to be Stanley with a plain keyhole style lever cap. The bottom is corrugated and was lapped smooth and flat. There is some pitting on the plane body, on the cheek and on the Diamond Edge Iron. There are no chips or breaks in the metal. A little staining on one cheek that is fine. The japanning is in very good condition. The plane appears to have been used moderately.. Look closely at the pictures.

• Plane Body 18\" Long x 2-7/8\" Wide with DE6 on toe with Stanley style Frog, Folded Lateral and small Brass Adjusting Nut
• Furniture is Hard Wood Handle and Hardwood front knob and in excellent condition with no repairs. (see pictures). It has the one piece countersunk top steel studs for the front knob and post and brass nut for the handle )tote) typical of the early DE series Diamond Edge..
• The Iron is 2-5/16\" Wide x 7-1/2\" Long and is stamped Shapleigh Hardware Diamond Edge
• The plain keyhole lever cap appears to be Stanley and is also 2-5/16\" wide.

Shipping Box is 22\" x 7\" x 6\" and weighs 8# 6 oz.
Norvell Shapleigh Hardware were purveyors of tools, implements, household goods and hardware, shipping from St. Louis to all points, especially west. My great grandfather was with Wells Fargo and handled shipping for E.C. Simmons, Shapleigh Hardware. Imagine wagons being loaded at docks in St. Louis and dispatched to River Boats for the Mississippi River ports south and overland trails to the West.
Like rival Sears, they carried full lines of top brand manufactured tools like Stanley, Sargent, Disston and others. As distributors, they provided full catalogs for their customers and regular sales visits resulted in hardware stores filled with just the right amount of inventory to run a profitable business. They also carried House Brands such as Diamond Edge, Keen Kutter, and more, made by the major manufacturers. Known for their clever advertising, Shapleigh was a household name and fiercely loyal followers were as passionate as those whose brand was Sears Roebuck. Today, after a host of mergers and acquisitions, you know them as True Value Hardware. ..
